The Books: So, here’s the thing: in what was supposed to be my last week of free reading time before my PhD starts on Monday (Eek!) I didn’t get any reading done. Last week, Thursday morning unexpectedly found me packing for a surprise visit to Disneyland (we still had free access from last year’s visit). In the past week I did manage to finish reading Painter of Silence but apart from that it has been eerily silent on the reading front.
I started Alif the Unseen a few days ago, but unfortunately it is not leaving me with a “must read everything NOW” feeling as much as I’d hoped. Then again my mind has been fairly preoccupied with last minute details that needed to be made in order before Monday [Have I mentioned that I'm nervous?]
I’m also hopelessly behind on my reading for the buddy read of Cloud Atlas that I’m doing together with Amy, Jessica, and Heather. I’m supposed to lead the discussion this Monday, so I’d better hurry up and finish reading sections 3 & 4 (last Monday) and 5 & 6 (upcoming Monday)! Gah, guess I still have a weekend of free reading time to look forward to.
The tea: I’m drinking mostly camomile tea as one of my wisdom teeth has decided to choose this moment to cause me excruciating pain by finally appearing. Yay. *sigh* Not that I do not like camomile tea. I love almost any type of tea, except perhaps for Lapsang Souchong or liquorice tea.
Thursday Tea is a weekly meme organised by Anastasia of Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog.

Good luck on Monday!!!
Thank you
Sorry about your tooth. The good news is, camomile tea helps you to relax, so that’s useful given Monday.
Good luck on Monday – of course it will all be much less scary than you think now, but isn’t that always the way it is with new things?
That is good news! I’d better go buy some more
Thank you Judith. I’m sure it will be okay, but I am an endless worrier so I’ll probably do a lot more of that before Mondat arrives.
I am also behind in my Cloud Atlas reading, and I am wondering if it will ever pick up. I know I just have to pick it up and get invested, but I am just not connecting with the characters at all!
I hope your tooth starts feeling better soon!
I haven’t picked up Cloud Atlas for the past 2 weeks. I really wonder if I’ll still know what is going on. It is not that I didn’t like it (though I found the first part difficult), it is just that I didn’t find the time for it. I hope I’ll be able to catch up before Monday. And I do hope it picks up for you!
Just finished Cloud Atlas and the middle bit gets a bit tricky (Part 6) and slowed down my reading tremendously! But a good read, nonetheless. Good luck with your PhD. That’s exciting!
O, oh. I’m supposed to have finished part 6 by monday. I hope I’ll be able to read it and still understand where the story is going. I’m glad to hear you did find it a good read.
And thank you! It is rather exciting
Best of luck with your PhD! It will be tough at times but there are also parts that are wonderful and that will give you that “oh man, I love my job” kind of feeling. Enjoy those and hang on to them, they’ll help you get through the rough patches.
Thanks for the tips! I’m sure there will be highs and very very lowpoints for me. I’ll try to remember what you said!
So it’s finally happening! Your PhD starting
How lovely to go on an unexpected trip to EuroDisney, did you have decent weather when you were there? Alif the Unseen is on my to-read list, but I’m not in a hurry to read it now, so I’ll patiently wait for your final verdict.
Is chamomile tea also helping to calm your nerves, or does it only work as a soother for your wisdom teeth?
Yes, finally. It feels so weird, but I’m very excited about it too.
The weather was great: 20-25 degrees. We did have one little sprinkling of rain but other than that it was perfect.
I’ll let you know what I think of Alif the Unseen. I’m not sure yet..
Best of luck for Monday, so exciting! I want to read Cloud Atlas sometime soon, having read a couple of very good reviews recently. Eww, liquorish tea, I’ve not heard of it before but can’t imagine it tasting too good!
I had no idea that you were getting your PhD! I’m wishing you good luck on Monday.
Hi, Iris:
You know — I thought Cloud Atlas was fine — but the unfortunately named “The Cloud Atlas,” by Liam Callahan, which came out at roughly the same time, is one of my favorite books.
And — GOOD LUCK on Monday!
