Thursday Tea: “White Teeth”

I hereby sign up for the Chunkster Challenge, because if my plans actually work out this year, I will be reading a lot (well, relatively many) books of over 450 pages. I still have to make a sign-up page and list the books I plan to read, I will keep you updated. The book I am currently reading will definitely make the list. (I just read the rules page, and I really do not like the rule about ebooks not being chunksters, so I’m already reconsidering).

The book: White Teeth by Zadie Smith. As you can see on the picture below, I own the Dutch translation of this novel. I bought it before blogging, before I even knew how famous Smith had become in the world of literature with her debut. The translation reads okay, though some of the directly quoted sentences  read a little awkwardly. I have a feeling I am really going to enjoy reading this, but it took me a while to get into the story. Now, by page 94 of 572, I finally feel the urge to keep reading. I am intrigued by the themes so far, religion and culture seem central to the whole story.

The tea: Green tea with lemongrass. One of my standard morning blends.

Bad weather = bad lighting = you can see all the scratches on out cheap IKEA table.

Do they go together? Does tea ever really relate well to white teeth? The tea is my morning blend, and I do feel the book is more of an afternoon or evening one, so no, they do not go together particularly well.

  1. Zadie Smith is on my reading list. Perhaps I should also join the chunkster challenge as I’ve enough on my TBR

  2. I had a hard time getting through this book. Lately, I’ve been thinking that perhaps I tried to read it at the wrong time. Anyway, I’m looking forward to your thoughts on it. Green tea with lemongrass sound divine. I’ve been experimenting with lemongrass here in Ghana. Would you believe that we don’t do much with the herb? Enjoy your reading.

  3. I loved this book, so I wish you well with it. And that tea sounds gooood :)

  4. I haven’t read the book, though I saw a TV adaptation a few years ago and liked it, though it was different to what I thought it would be like. Never would have thought the book was so long though!

  5. Never read this, but it’s one I’d like to at some point – when my schedule is less crowded…

…still not sure how my schedule has become crowded before the middle of January :(

  7. I read this last year and I could not stand it. From a cultural aspect, I suppose it’s fairly interesting, but it was just utterly miserable. I only hope that you enjoy it more than I did.

  8. White Teeth! I had that out from the library a few years ago, but never actually got to it. I still mean to read it one day, though.
